Hāngī, kōrero, raranga, music, stalls, lanterns, face painting, telescopes, tī rākau (stick games) workshop and more!

Te Whai Community Trust will host a boutique event of activities
for you and your whānau to enjoy as we celebrate the first official Matariki public holiday on Friday 24 June 2022.

Performances by Aliyah & Te Puawai Connelly-Richards, and musician Josh Leys. We end with a special kōrero from Te Uri o Hau kaumatua as the sun goes down, followed by a chance to star-gaze through a telescopic lens.

View submissions from our Matariki colouring activity led by Kaipara artist Joe Paikea and murals painted by local rangatahi. Bring your picnic bag and blanket to support our zero waste kaupapa, listen to the kōrero and feast on the deliciously prepared hāngī.

We welcome visitors to experience this popular tourist destination with an event that highlights Matariki while acknowledging the history and hapū of Te Uri o Hau.

Matariki ki MangawhaiExperience Matariki in Mangawhai with a boutique celebration on the public holiday at Te Whai Community House

Matariki Colouring ActivityKaipara artist Joe Paikea has designed a colouring activity for all. Bring your finished picture in to Te Whai before 17 June to feature at Matariki ki Mangawhai. Click on image for more info

Kōrero o ngā whetū a MatarikiHaere mai ki te kōrero. Kaumatua from Te Uri o Hau will present kōrero to connect with Matariki and the history of Mangawhai from 4pm

Make your own lanternBring your lantern to Matariki ki Mangawhai - battery powered mini lights only! Matariki is a time to reflect and remember our loved ones who have passed. Click on the image for more info

Josh LeysCome along to see the multi-talented Josh Leys perform. He can beat-box, rap, sing, and loop up a party as a one-man band. Performing from 12pm and throughout the afternoon

Ngā Whetū CreationsTī Rākau (stick games) workshop for tamariki and featured tukutuku panels. Children can draw on their own rākau to take home 12 - 4pm

Sustainable KaiparaOur connection to te tāiao with Matariki. Pledge to take action for te tāiao using the tohu of Te iwa a Matariki as a guide 12 - 4pm

Telescopic visionLook to the stars through the lens of a telescope from 5 - 6pm

Harakeke BasketryMake a harakeke putiputi flower and purchase beautiful baskets with contemporary designs based on Māori traditions and concepts 12 - 4pm

HāngīHaere mai ki te wā kai! A delicious feast of hāngi will be served around 2pm. Please remember to bring your plates and cutlery, a drink and a rug. This will be a zero waste event.

Painting the starsFace painting for all from 12 - 3pm, gold coin donations will go towards Te Whai's services

Mural ChallengeNgā rangatahi o Mangawhai have been busy painting murals for our community house.. as the sky dims, see them glow in the dark!
