Connecting older people in rural Mangawhai
Public transport options in rural Mangawhai have received a boost thanks tofunding from the 2024 Age friendly Fund.
Te Whai Community Trust was one of 12 organisations across Aotearoa to receive an Age friendly Fund grant, which aims to assist projects that promote Age friendly communities.
The Manaaki Transport Programme is a community-led initiative providing free transportation services for older people in the rural Mangawhai area. The programme aims to reduce isolation, improve mobility, and increase participation in social and community events. Operating three days a week, this programme will be managed by a part-time coordinator using a team of volunteer drivers.
General Manager Kiri Eriwata said they were incredibly grateful to receive the Age friendly grant. “This funding will help us support our older community members, ensuring theystay connected to essential services, social opportunities, and their wider community. It’s a step forward in creating a more inclusive and age-friendly Mangawhai.”
She said the programme is designed to bridge the gap for older people in the area who face mobility barriers. “Together, we’re building a more caring and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.”
Office for Seniors Age friendly Programme Lead Karen Piercy said transport options for older people were essential in creating an Age friendly community. “Having transport to connect people with key destinations is critical for the creation of Age friendly communities."
“In an area such as Mangawhai, these sort of rural transport schemes make a massive difference to older people and their ability to access essential services and remain connected in their community.”
